Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Interview and Information for Tanning Article

Caroline Pellant is a beauty therapist who specialises in tanning.
I have asked her for her advice on the following topics regarding self tanning:
·         Pre tanning tips
·         Different types of fake tan and their pros and cons
·         How to maintain fake tan
·         Recommended product

These were her responses:
Pre tanning tips
“It is essential to shower before tanning to ensure clean skin, but never apply the tanning product when skin is wet as this will lead to an uneven coverage.”
“Exfoliation is key to remove dead skin cells, this will help reduce the risk of streaks.”
“Moisturising is also essential to help provide a smooth base for the tan. Focus on areas such as the hands, elbows, knees, feet and ankles as these areas. If you can get a tan enhancing moisturiser then these work brilliantly to increase your natural melanin.”
“Always apply tan with a tanning mitt. This way you won’t end up with orange hands, and they coverage will be even without leaving excess on the skin which creates streaks.”
Different Types of fake tan
“Wash off tan gives an instant glow and is good for first timers because if it doesn’t come out as you liked, you can wash it off straight away and try again.”
“Cream tanning products are the most common and very easy to apply, although they take a while to dry and first timers could get streaks. I would advise applying before bed to allow maximum time to dry without staining clothes.”
“Gel tanners leave a glistening finish and have a wet look when you apply them so you can see where you have applied and where you haven’t. These take even longer to dry and can leave an oily finish so these are also good to apply before bed.”
“Spray or airbrush tans are the quickest drying from my experience and are most commonly used in salons but the self tanning range is just as good. The give a lighter tan but are less prone to streaks. Although you have to be careful not to spray tan everything around you at the same time.”
“Mousse tanners are the easiest to apply. They dry very quickly and give excellent coverage. However because they dry so quickly, its difficult to see where you have applied and where you haven’t so you could end up repeating over areas you don;t need to and causing streaks.”
“Tinted moisturisers are the least hassle of all tanning products. They are applies just like a moisturiser so when used daily they give a gradual tan with great results. However, just like a normal moisturiser they can be tacky until completely dry.”
To help maintain your tan
“moisturise daily with a tan enhancing moisturiser that i previously mentioned.”
“Try to avoid chlorine or sitting in water for a long amount of time, this will remove the tan and not evenly! So you will end up blotchy and its not always easy to cover.”
“I recommend a light exfoliation every 2-3  days after tanning to keep removing dead skin cells and ensure the tan fades evenly.”
