Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Nul Point?

Boyband Blue has been announced as the United Kingdom’s entry for this year’s ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ with catchy pop tune ‘I Can’.
The song, written by band members Lee Ryan and Duncan James, has been tipped to give the country its best Eurovision result for many years. The pop entry holds similarities to Blue’s pop style during their successful career which began in 2001.
The band was very popular after they began in 2001 and has toured the majority of Europe over the past few years. It is hoped that some established fan base and their experience will help us avoid ‘nul point’
Band member Simon Webbe told the press: "I've always wanted to represent my country, so this is a truly exciting experience for Blue."
Last year’s entry, Josh Dubovie, received a mere 10 points for his song ‘that sounds good to me’. It is hoped that this will not be the case for Blue.
The last time the UK won the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ was in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves’ singing ‘love shine a light’. Prior to this, during the 80s and early 90s, the UK was pipped at the post several times and was unable to get past the second place. After the win in 1997, it was all downhill, with several low ranking entries and in 2003 pop act Jemini scored ‘nul point’.
The bookies favourite to win is French entry ‘Sognu’ sung by opera singer Amaury Vassili. He is closely followed by Azerbaijan and Ireland’s most questionable export, Jedward with their upbeat entry, ‘Lipstick’ at 3/1 to win. Paddy power betting site has predicted odds of 12/1 for the UK to win.
