Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Perfect Wax - Final Edit

Perfect Wax
By Emma Blight
Summer time is vast approaching and that means it’s time to get as much skin on show to catch that tan (or that man!). Time to make sure our skin is as smooth as a baby’s bum, and that starts with a bit of hair removal. Beauty expert Lesley Devlin shares her top tips on waxing.
1.       Preparation is key.
With proper preparation you can make sure you get the best results and hopefully reduce the after effects. For best results, the hair should be at least ¼ inch long and Lesley stresses the importance of making sure your skin is clean before a wax. It is also important to wear loose clothing to allow skin to breathe.
Are you bad at dealing with pain? If so, Lesley advises to avoid waxing during your period.
“Your body will be a lot more sensitive and, as well as the pain being a lot worse, the after effects such as a rash or inflammation may increase.
Lesley’s top tip to reduce pain is to take an aspirin 45 minutes before the treatment.
“It will reduce pain as well as reduce the risk of inflammation,” she says.
2.       DIY
It is always tempting to try things out at home, especially when your budget can’t quite stretch to the luxury salon prices, but it is still important to know what you are doing before you begin.
Hair should be removed in a certain way. “Always apply wax or strip with the direction of hair and remove wax or strip away from the direction of hair growth.” Still clueless? Pat some talcum powder onto the area so you can see the hairs and which way they grow. You can also stroke the hairs and should be able to feel which way they are growing.
Try using Veet’s range of home waxing strips. They are available in most retailers and have strips designed for sensitivity as well!
3.       Tender loving after-care.
There are many things to avoid directly after a wax that you may not have thought of, such as the sun or the sauna.
“The heat can cause hyper-pigmentation to the area which is a permanent darkening of the skin,” says Lesley.
Prone to ingrowing hairs? Lesley’s encourages her clients in her Scottish salon to regularly exfoliate once the skin has healed and to use an ingrow solution. She recommends Nads ingrow solution for only £7.97.
A must have after a waxing treatment is a moisturiser or lotion containing either tea tree or witch hazel. These products soothe the skin and help improve healing. We found a fab tea tree and witch hazel body butter by Grace Cole for only £3.59.
Finally, there is one thing Lesley advises to avoid that you may not be too happy about.
“After any sort of wax on the bikini area such as bikini line or Brazilian, you should avoid sex for at least 10 hours. The heat, friction ad stickyness can cause ingrowing hairs or even infections.”
So what have we learnt from all this expert advice then girls? That we definitely need to avoid booking our bikini wax on the day of that big date!
