Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

You Blue It

Chelsea’s loss at Old Trafford almost certainly decides the Premier League winners, with Manchester United now being only one point away from their 19th title.
The game was set to determine whether the Blues could steal the title for a second year running or whether United could return the crown and bring home a record breaking number of titles.
The 2-1 defeat began when Javier Hernandez put his print on the game. The young Mexican striker wasted no time in blasting the ball into the back of the net after only 36 seconds of play. Hernandez has now scored 20 goals for his club in his debut season, being the first player to do so since Ruud van Nistelrooy ten years ago.
And this wasn’t the only action from United for this game. Hernandez’s early goal was followed by a powerful header from team captain, Nemanja Vidic, after a perfectly placed cross from Ryan Giggs. This 23 minute goal put the pressure on Chelsea to come back in the second half.
Frank Lampard gave Chelsea fans a ray of hope with a scrappy goal in the second half, but the glory was still far from reach as United continued to dominate the pitch. As Howard Webb blew the final whistle, Old Trafford exploded with celebration.
“This game was important for us to fight for the title today but we didn’t do our best,” said Chelsea chief, Carlo Ancelotti to the press. “Manchester United played better than us and they deserved to win. Also I think they deserved to win the title.”
The 51 year old manager’ future at the club remains uncertain after the defeat at Old Trafford which may have cost them the title of Premier League Champions.
“We lost the game in the first minute. We started so badly. Conceding the goal in the first minute, it was very difficult,” said Ancelotti.
United now need to maintain their standard of play and avoid being beaten in order to take home the trophy. Their next two opponents are Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool.
Manager Alex Ferguson, 69, told the press:
“The players won’t muck it up. They’ll get the point. It’s fantastic to say we are the most successful team in the country regarding championships.”
