Welcome to my blogbook for my Negotiated Portfolio; the final module of my Ba(Hons) Journalism degree.

Please make sure you head right back to the oldest posts in order to see all of my thought processes and research, or if you prefer, click the tags relevant to the articles within the portfolio which can be found to the right hand side of the blog.

Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Profile Features/Interviews

In Cosmo, there are two types of profiles/interviews.
The first is a glamorous celebrity interview which usually features a strong current female figure. The interview usually is full of glamorous, glossy photographs and an interview which usually covers a three-four page spread.
The questions are usually question and answer format with relation to the celebrity’s career, relationships, body image and other similar topics. They usually tell a story of success or a struggle which gives inspiration to the readers. Below is an example of an interview with Katy Perry. I have included one page of copy and one page of the type of imagery used.

The other form of interview is real life stories based on real people. They are usually stories to provide inspiration or details of a shocking story. Examples could be a struggle with disease or loss of a family member, or a shocking story such as kidnap, rape or attack. The articles aim to shock and provide information about the specific topic, as well as hope and advice for anyone in similar topics. The stories can range from 1 page to two-three page spreads, including images of the interviewee in a natural setting as well as some home photographs to show the reader it is a real story. Below are a couple of example articles.

I plan to write two profile/interview features.
The first will be based on studying later on in life. Linda Blight is a divorcee from near Bristol with 3 children who is currently working 2 jobs and studying for an Open University degree. The questions will be aimed around reasons she didn’t study when she was younger, her motivation to do so now and experiences along the way. The aim of this article is to provide inspiration to women who have had to put their studies on hold due to having children or financial situations.
This profile will be based on the glamorous celebrity interview discussed in the previous blog post. The format will generally be question and answer. If deemed necessary, this will change depending on the outcome of the interview. Student photographer Natalie Blight will provide the images in the style of the Cosmo celebrity interviews.
The final article will hopefully be a two-three page feature including images.
The second feature will be a real life story. I plan to interview Ryan Gingell, a 21 year old student in Brighton currently beginning the initial stages of a sex change from female to male. The article will show link with a similar storyline in ‘Hollyoaks’. The format will be continuous copy rather than a question and answer. The images will be provided by Ryan as they will be home photos in the style of a photo album documenting his change.
This article will include a fact box of useful contacts aimed at people dealing with the same issue.
The finished copy will be a three page feature including images.
