Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Summer Beats - Final Edit

Summer Beats
By Emma Blight
We love the summer time! There’s nothing better than chilling on the beach, catching a tan with your iPod in listening to the some perfect summer music. Or perhaps blasting out some hot tunes while on an exciting road trip. Whatever you are doing this summer, you will need to create an amazing soundtrack for every situation. Check out what we picked as our five favourite sunshine albums.
Rhianna - Loud
Rhianna is just one of those girls that we just wish we could be; consistently a fashion focus and rumoured to be getting close to a certain Mr Usher Raymond, we couldn’t be more ‘jel’. Despite this she has still had time to roll out the hits on her fab new album; ‘Loud’. The album features 11 tracks from the Caribbean princess and if it still hasn’t made it onto your i-Pod then there better be a good excuse.
This album is full of songs to match your every need. Feel like screaming at your lazy boyfriend? Let rip to ‘Only Girl in the World’. Need a ballad for a good cry? Try ‘California King Bed’. Time to cheer up your heart-broken girlfriend? Turn up ‘Raining Men’ featuring Nicki Minaj. Whatever you need, Rhi Rhi has it covered.
As well as a succession of hits that have already been released, including ‘What’s My Name’ featuring Drake, the albums unreleased tracks are just as good. Remember the Eminem track ‘Love the way you lie’ which feature Rhi Rhi’s beautiful vocals on the chorus, well check out our princess’ haunting own version of the track, it’s sure to pull on your heart strings.
Blare out track 1 – ‘S&M’ as you get ready to go out to practice your bump and grind.

Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday
Nicki Minaj is the hottest female artist around at the moment and we just can’t get enough of her. Pink Friday is the first studio album to be released and has 13 hip hop beauties for us to get our teeth into.
For anybody who knows anything about Miss Minaj is that she isn’t always Miss Minaj. Her image holds several different alter-egos with completely different personalities and each one of them comes out to play on this album. Her schizophrenic style reflects all those moods we hide inside us. One minute she’s barking profanities at her haters, which we all know we wish we had the confidence to do and the next she’s fluttering her eyelashes and getting all gooey over a love interest.
This album is definitely for those independent, liberating women. Tracks such as ‘I’m the Best’ are real ego boosters and for those fun loving girls, there’s the catchy tracks such as ‘Check it Out’ featuring Will.I.Am, with a beat that will not leave your head.
With Nicki being one of the most wanted stars around, it’s no surprise she has an abundance of sexy collaborations on this record. With input from Eminem, Natasha Bedingfield, Rhianna, Kanye West and fellow Young Money super star, Drake, Nicki has given us the whole package.
Skip to track 7 – ‘Moment for Life’ featuring Drake, when you need a bit of inspiration.

Chris Brown – F.A.M.E
Who better to croon some sexy summer tunes to us as we cruise to the beach than Chris Brown? His new album F.A.M.E is full of smooth R&B beats and some all out party tunes. The album is home to 17 tracks including already released dance hit ‘Yeah x3’ and new single ‘Beautiful People’ featuring Benny Bennassi.
We knew lads liked to think about sex, but we certainly know what is on our beloved Breezy’s mind as we bob our head along with tracks such as ‘Beg for it’ and ‘No Bulls*!t’. Something tells us Chris needs a bit of loving, and he’s not about the innuendo, he’s getting straight to the point. Get ready to get hot under your bikini collar ladies, there are certainly some steamy tracks to get you in the mood for when you meet Mr Muscles while you are catching those rays.
CB has done some master name dropping (not that he needs to) with collaborations with the likes of Ludacris, Tyga, Timbaland, Wiz Khalifa and a stonking party tune featuring Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes called ‘Look at me now’. There’s even a cute little love song called ‘Next 2 you’ featuring our favourite little Bieber.
This album should hit your i-Pod as you’re topping up the tan and day dreaming about meeting Mr Right on your girl’s night out tonight.
Skip to track 5 – ‘She Ain’t You’ for a chilled out vibe sampling Michael Jackson’s ‘Human Nature’ and Breezy telling us how much better we are than every other girl. Awwww, thanks Chris!

Jessie J – Who You Are
Essex-born Jessie J has stormed the UK music scene in 2011 and her album ‘Who You Are’ will not be leaving our CD player any time soon. The alternative star has broken the rules of the perfect pop princess with her edgy image combined with her head bopping tunes and has given us an album to crank up while you road trip with your girls.
The record is a mix of classy ballads like ‘Casualty of Love’ and ‘Big White Room’ and catchy pop songs such as hit single ‘Price Tag’ featuring B.O.B and ‘Abracadabra’ with the occasional rock-infused blast in the form of tracks like debut single ‘Do it like a dude’. Whichever track you’re listening to, with her infectious and powerful voice, we guarantee that the hairbrush will come out and you will be singing along at high volume.
Jessie has never hidden her individuality and her album encourages you to ignore the haters and really be who you are with tracks such as ‘Rainbow’. And for that big ego boost, she has delivered us beauties like ‘Who’s laughing now?’
Fancy just chilling out? Try skipping to the bonus tracks for beautiful, summery, acoustic versions of her two hit singles ‘Price Tag’ and ‘Do it like a dude’.

Britney Spears – Femme Fatale
The original pop princess is back and what surprise does she have in store for us now? Only a bit of dance and some dub beats. Don’t mind if we do, Britney! New album, ‘Femme Fatale’ is a dance and dub infused album combined with Britney’s pretty pop vocals that gives us 16 tracks that are perfect for summer.
There is no doubt that this should be your summer party album. It’s full of party tracks from heavy beats on ‘Inside Out’ to catchy pop tunes like ‘I Wanna Go’. Each track club anthem after anthem until you reach ‘How I Roll’ which is a fab chilled out track which has some similarities to Owl City, with her own little Britney twist.
It wouldn’t be a Britney album without her trademark ballad, and she’s outdone herself this time. The contrast from the big party tunes to ballad ‘Criminal’ is brilliant. And she’s managed to get her hands on master collaborator Will.I.Am for a bassy duet that you will be compelled to crank up.
Putting Britney and big beats in the same sentence may have seemed risky, but she has done us proud with an album which will reign the clubs this summer.
Jump to track 12 for our favourite party anthem, ‘Up and Down’ which is a bonus track if you’re clever enough to have bought the deluxe version.
