Project Brief

In this unit you will be required to produce an 8,000-word (or equivalent) portfolio of journalistic work that is targeted at existing publications and online media outlets, together with a log book or blog that documents your research and decision making process and a critique of your work.

Using the core journalistic skills already accrued on the course you will be expected to produce a number of pieces that demonstrate an appreciation of both audience and style. With the support of a tutor and through peer group work you will initiate ideas and develop a portfolio of marketable stories.

Your portfolio must include an appreciation of online journalism and include at least one item that is written/designed for the web. You may, if you choose to, submit a new magazine concept for part or all of this assignment.

Waxing Article first Draft

Summer time is vast approaching and that means it’s time to get as much skin on show to catch that tan (or that man!). Beauty expert Lesley Devlin shares her top tips on waxing.
1.       Preparation is key.
With proper preparation you can make sure you get the best results and hopefully reduce the after effects. For best results, the hair should be at least ¼ inch long and Lesley stresses the importance of making sure your skin is clean before a wax. It is also important to wear loose clothing to allow skin to breathe.
Are you bad at dealing with pain? If so, Lesley advises to avoid waxing during your period.
“Your body will be a lot more sensitive and, as well as the pain being a lot worse, the after effects such as a rash or inflammation may increase.
Lesley’s top tip to reduce pain is to take an aspirin 45 minutes before the treatment.
“It will reduce pain as well as reduce the risk of inflammation,” she says.

First Draft of Tanning Article

We all know that having sun-kissed skin makes us feel more wonderful, but how do you get the glow if you are stuck in the office all day. Tanning specialist Caroline Pellant gives us a few tips to achieving the perfect fake tan.
Is your tanning kit at the ready ladies? No? Well here are the essentials when it comes to tanning. As well as the obvious bottle of fake tan, you should also stock up on exfoliator and moisturiser. After cleaning the skin, you should exfoliate.
“This will remove dead skin cells and help reduce the risk of streaks,” says Caroline.

Moisturising will also help avoid those dreaded streaks;

Pitch/Rationale for Online waxing article

Pitch to Cosmopolitan web editor Ashley Womble regarding beauty feature – Perfect Wax
Dear Ms Womble,
I wondered if you would be interested in the following features about waxing for the Beauty section of your website.
I think this feature will be attractive due to the high volume of women, specifically your target audience wanting to wax for the summer.
It has a nice chatty style which matches the house style of your current layout. I am aware that this is a feature that will run regularly as it is a top summer theme; however, I feel my article would be perfect for your publication. I am a qualified beauty therapist with contacts all over the beauty industry and plenty of product knowledge of my own. This will help create a highly informative article and give your readers the best advice possible.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Emma Blight

Pitch to Cosmopolitan beauty director Leah Wyer regarding Beauty feature – ‘Tip Top Tanning’
Dear Ms Wyer,
I wondered if you would be interested in the following features about tanning for an upcoming summer issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine.
I think this feature will be attractive due to the high volume of women, specifically your target audience wanting to top up their tan if they are unable to enjoy the sunshine, or in fact, we don’t get enough in this country this summer.
I thought these feature would fit nicely within your ‘Beauty’ section. It has a nice chatty style which matches the house style of your current layout. I am aware that this is a feature that will run annually as it is a top summer theme; however, I feel my article would be perfect for your publication. I am a qualified beauty therapist with contacts all over the beauty industry and plenty of product knowledge of my own. This will help create a highly informative article and give your readers the best advice possible.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Online Articles

Cosmo’s online writing style is slightly different to the magazine. Although the sections are very similar, if not the same, the way the articles are laid out is completely different.

The articles are less image heavy and although they still incorporate the relaxed colloquial language, but still in a different style. The articles are a lot shorted and structured more like a news story with feature content, rather than large feature articles.

Beauty Features

The Beauty section of Cosmo is made up of articles giving beauty advice and trialling beauty products.

The product trials usually involve a review of several products that are made to do the same job to make comparisons between prices and effectiveness.
